Television Academy가 제78회 Primetime Emmy Awards 후보를 발표하며, 최근 몇 년 사이 가장 치열한 경쟁이 될 것으로 전망되는 레이스의 막을 올렸다. HBO Max의 The Pitt는 작품상인 Outstanding Drama Series와 Noah Wyle의 Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series를 포함해 총 25개 부문 후보에 오르며 전체 프로그램 가운데 최다 지명을 기록했다. 한편 Hacks는 다섯 번째이자 마지막 시즌에서 24개 부문 후보에 이름을 올리며, 종전 코미디 부문 최다 기록인 23개를 보유하고 있던 The Bear(2024년)과 그 기록과 어깨를 나란히 했던 The Studio(2025년)을 넘어서는 역사를 썼다.
Apple TV는 드라마와 코미디 두 분야 모두에서 두드러진 존재감을 입증했다. 첫해를 맞은 호러 코미디 Widow’s Bay는 초자연적 현상에 시달리는 섬의 시장 역을 맡은 Matthew Rhys가 주연으로 나서며 19개 부문 후보에 올라, 모든 신작 가운데 최다 지명을 기록했다. 또 다른 Apple 신작인 Pluribus는 Rhea Seehorn이 이끄는 디스토피아 SF 드라마로, 18개 부문 후보에 오르며 그 뒤를 이었다. 리미티드 시리즈 부문에서는 Netflix의 BEEF 시즌 2가 16개 부문 후보에 올랐고, HBO Max의 DTF St. Louis가 13개 부문 지명을 받았다.
Rhys는 코미디 부문 Widow’s Bay로 Lead Actor 후보에 오른 데 이어, 리미티드 시리즈 부문 The Beast in Me로 또 한 번 연기상 후보에 이름을 올리며, 이날 아침 가장 주목받는 인물 중 한 명으로 떠올랐다. Jason Bateman 역시 DTF St. Louis와 Black Rabbit 등 여러 작품에서 복수 지명을 거머쥐었다. 코미디 여우주연상 레이스에서는 Lisa Kudrow와 Jean Smart가 각자의 마지막 시즌인 The Comeback와 Hacks를 등에 업고 정면 승부를 펼칠 예정이다. 한편 드라마 부문에서는 Euphoria가 호불호가 갈린 마지막 시즌의 여파로 Outstanding Drama Series 후보에서는 탈락했으나, Zendaya와 Colman Domingo가 연기상 후보에 오르며 체면을 지켰다.
시상식에서는 개편된 Outstanding Variety Series 부문도 눈여겨볼 만하다. Television Academy가 기존의 스크립티드 버라이어티와 토크 시리즈를 하나의 카테고리로 통합하면서, 이 부문은 투표의 90% 이상을 득표한 작품은 모두 트로피를 받는 “area” 어워드 방식으로 운영되며, 복수 수상도 가능해졌다. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert는 5월 화려한 피날레와 함께 종영했음에도 이번 부문에 이름을 올렸으며, Saturday Night Live, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, The Daily Show와 Jimmy Kimmel Live!와 함께 경쟁에 나선다.
올해 주요 프로그램 14개 부문에는 총 555편이 출품돼, 지난해 600편에서 소폭 감소했다. Law & Order: SVU의 주연 Mariska Hargitay가 오는 9월 14일 월요일 생중계되는 시상식의 진행을 맡아, 15년 만에 Emmy 시상식을 이끄는 첫 여성 호스트가 된다.
